Coal auction: Govt upbeat of earning more revenue than CAG's loss estimate of Rs 1.86L cr

The auction for coal blocks began aggressively with Anil Ambani's Reliance Cement bagging a block with a bid of Rs 1,402 per tonne, more than nine times the floor price of Rs 150, prompting the government to call it a grand success that would generate more revenue than the Comptroller and Auditor General of India's (CAG's) estimate of Rs 1.86 lakh crore lost by free distribution. GMR Energy won the Talabira -I coal block in Odisha with a very aggressive bid of Rs 478 per tonne. Adani Power, Essar Power, Sesa Sterlite, GMR Energy and OPG Power Generation were eyeing the Talabira-I block previously allotted to Hindalco. Industry experts say companies were desperate to ensure fuel for plants and had made unsustainable bids in the online auction that kicked-off on Saturday. Reliance Cement bagged the Sial Ghogri underground mine in Madhya Pradesh, beating Hindustan Zinc and OCL Iron & Steel for the block earlier held by Prism Cement. For the other mine on offer, Talabi

11.5 crore Jan Dhan accounts opened; most of India is banked: Jaitley

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the financial inclusion scheme in his first Independence Day speech last year. It was launched in August with a target to open bank accounts for 7.5 crore poor persons by January 26, 2015. The target was later increased to 10 crore accounts.  Addressing a press conference here, Jaitley said the government would use these bank accounts to pass on benefits to individuals under its various social security schemes.  Financial Services Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said that even  Guinness Book of World Records has recognized the achievements made under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. In its citation, the Guinness Book said: "Most bank accounts opened in one week as part of the Financial Inclusion Campaign is 18,096,130 and was achieved by the Department of Financial Services, Government of India from August 23 to 29, 2014."  Exclusion of a large number of people from the banking network was inhibiting growth, Jaitley said. After Modi's appeal, United Nations to declare June 21 as World Yoga Day today

In a proud moment for India, the United Nations will declare June 21 as World Yoga Day on Thursday after Prime Minister Narendra Modi had urged the world community to celebrate Indian yoga at the international level in his speech at the United Nations General Assembly in September. The decision is being seen as a huge diplomatic win for India. 170 nations had supported Modi's proposal. European Union president Herman Van Rompuy had also told Modi in November that the 28-member EU supported his idea for a Yoga Day at the UN. "Three months ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had appealed to the world community that India's yoga should be celebrated as World Yoga Day. I am happy to inform you that we have received support of 170 nations and four days from today, the United Nations will declare June 21 as the World Yoga Day," Swaraj had said on last week. Keeping his focus on the importance of Yoga, Modi had named Shripad Naik as the minister for Yoga and traditio

Government of India to develop 700 islands for tourism

Many  of the over 700 uninhabited islands across India will be developed for  tourism, filmmaking, entertainment activities, as honeymoon  destinations, maritime security and also for generating non-conventional  energy - both wind and solar.  This scheme will be part of the  ambitious Sagarmala project. The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the  concept note and institutional framework to implement this massive  project that Narendra Modi government has revived. The Sagarmala concept  was first mooted by Atal Bihari Vajpayee during his last tenure.  "We have a total of 1,208 islands including the uninhabited ones and  there are 185 lighthouses. These will be developed as hub of tourist  activity. We will carry out a feasibility study," shipping minister  Nitin Gadkari said.  However, sources said that before coming  out with any such plan, the government would have to consider the  environmental impact, rich and fragile ecology of those islands and in  some cases the adv

A Railway project has been completed before its Target Date.

Government is notorious for delays in every step of any project. But  the final phase of gauge conversion on the challenging 210-km Lumding-Silchar hill section in Assam has been  completed at least one week earlier than the target date. I don't know about the specifics, complexity and technical details of work/project. Nevertheless completing it within the scheduled time definitely deserves an applause. This is a trend we should set. This is definitely an accomplishment. Better known for inordinate delays in completing projects, the railways – in this case Northeast Frontier Railways – have achieved a feat of sorts; the final phase of gauge conversion on the challenging 210-km Lumding-Silchar hill section in Assam has been completed at least one week sort of the target date. The rebuilt track, much of it a new alignment, took its first train – a goods train comprising 42 wagons of potatoes –  on Friday from Lumding to Silchar, with union railway minister Suresh Prabhu formally

Operation Smile: Rajnath Singh's push helps recover 2500 missing children

Four months ago, a report landed on  Home Minister  Rajnath Singh's table from the Ghaziabad Police. Pleasantly surprised to find that the police unit had recovered 227  missing   children  within 30 days by launching a unique campaign,  'Operation Smile' , Singh decided to ask all states to emulate this campaign. The plan has worked as at least eight states have told the Ministry that they rescued over 2500 missing children in the month of January alone by emulating the  campaign  of Ghaziabad Police. ET has accessed the letter written by then Home Secretary Anil Goswami, on Singh's instructions, to the police chiefs of all states on December 12, detailing contours of the new plan. "Since the  Supreme Court  has been emphasizing upon the early recovery of all missing children, it is desirable that based on the experience gained in 'Operation Smile', all states may take up this initiative," the letter had said. It added that  Ghaziabad P

Childcare centres, ATMs along national highways soon

They say it's more about the journey than the destination. And it's perhaps this mantra which has driven the road transport ministry to devise a new roadmap for more comfortable road trips on India's highways. Over the next two years, all the major highways of the country will boast of such facilities as food courts, restaurants, internet facilities, ATMs, childcare facilities as well as rooms for breaks amid l ong journeys. "While there will be separate complexes for car and bus drivers, the facilities at sites meant for truckers would be different.Their requirement is different.  "The entire scheme has been designed in a manner that people get a good place to take a break, rest and eat during long journeys. There will be more such complexes along divided highways," said a ministry official.  Sources said road transport minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the plan, and has asked for the work to start. Soon after taking charge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi h

PM Modi dedicates to nation Rs 12,000-crore project at Rourkela Steel Plant

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has exhorted the domestic steel industry to raise its production capacity to bridge the gap with China and in line with the government's plans to boost the country's manufacturing sector.  India has already left the US behind to emerge as the world's third largest steel producer. However, I am not happy to remain in that position. We are behind China which is the global leader in steel. We have to take large strides to move ahead," the PM said on Wednesday.  He added, "With 65% of our population below 35 years, India's strength lies in developing adequate skills to take its development agenda forward."  China produced 780 million tonnes of steel last year while India's production was around 82 mt last year.  The PM was addressing a large public gathering attended by chief executives of some of India's top steel makers at a ceremony to dedicate the Rs 12,000-crore modernisation and expansion of Steel Authority of India
