PM Modi dedicates to nation Rs 12,000-crore project at Rourkela Steel Plant

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has exhorted the domestic steel industry to raise its production capacity to bridge the gap with China and in line with the government's plans to boost the country's manufacturing sector.

India has already left the US behind to emerge as the world's third largest steel producer. However, I am not happy to remain in that position. We are behind China which is the global leader in steel. We have to take large strides to move ahead," the PM said on Wednesday.

He added, "With 65% of our population below 35 years, India's strength lies in developing adequate skills to take its development agenda forward."

China produced 780 million tonnes of steel last year while India's production was around 82 mt last year.

The PM was addressing a large public gathering attended by chief executives of some of India's top steel makers at a ceremony to dedicate the Rs 12,000-crore modernisation and expansion of Steel Authority of India's Rourkela Steel Plant to the nation.

Apart from Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, whose support helped in the passage of the revised mining bill recently, the meet was also attended by Union steel secretary Rakesh Singh, SAIL chairman CS Verma, Tata Steel managing director TV Narendran, JSW Steel chairman Sajjan Jindal and NMDC's chairman and MD Narendra Kothari.

HRD minister proves her generosity and genuine concern towards education and real talent

Dharamraj works for a Surat mill and hardly manages to fend for his family of seven. When sons - Raju, 18, and Brijesh, 19, broke the news of their stellar performance to their dad, he didn't even know why it was such a big deal. Both his sons have cracked the IIT entrance test — Raju securing rank 167 and Brijesh 410. Dharamraj, a daily-wage earner, desperately needs Rs 1 lakh for their admission fees. But that's an astronomical sum, for he barely makes ends meet. Dharamraj and his family live in a rundown mud hut with a tarpaulin thatch at Rehua Lalganj village. Dharamraj owns eight goats, one cycle, and a table fan. They bagged scholarships to prepare for their IIT entrance. But now what? Where to raise the money from? I don't own a single inch of land," lamented Dharamraj. Both boys scored over 95% in their Class X exams, after which they were picked for a scholarship programme. HRD Minister Mrs. Smriti Irani has assured the IIT 2015 topper that his ent...

The investment will be made under a project called Disha in certain identified districts. The computer literacy programme is critical for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, Digital India , which hopes to bridge the digital divide in the country. The government will choose the districts where this programme will be run. One person would be chosen from every eligible household for training. The main objective of the programme is to declare the selected blocks and districts 100 per cent digitally literate.
