The government has launched Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) for separation of agriculture and non- agriculture feeders, strengthening of sub-transmission and distribution infrastructure for adequate electricity supply in rural areas.

Under the scheme, all un-electrified villages/ habitations would be covered for electrification which would give access to electricity to rural households. All the remaining un-electrified villages are targeted to be electrified.

In the 12th Plan period (2012-17), projects amounting to Rs 63,810 crore has been sanctioned so far under DDUGJY, including the subsumed Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana,

HRD minister proves her generosity and genuine concern towards education and real talent

Dharamraj works for a Surat mill and hardly manages to fend for his family of seven. When sons - Raju, 18, and Brijesh, 19, broke the news of their stellar performance to their dad, he didn't even know why it was such a big deal. Both his sons have cracked the IIT entrance test — Raju securing rank 167 and Brijesh 410. Dharamraj, a daily-wage earner, desperately needs Rs 1 lakh for their admission fees. But that's an astronomical sum, for he barely makes ends meet. Dharamraj and his family live in a rundown mud hut with a tarpaulin thatch at Rehua Lalganj village. Dharamraj owns eight goats, one cycle, and a table fan. They bagged scholarships to prepare for their IIT entrance. But now what? Where to raise the money from? I don't own a single inch of land," lamented Dharamraj. Both boys scored over 95% in their Class X exams, after which they were picked for a scholarship programme. HRD Minister Mrs. Smriti Irani has assured the IIT 2015 topper that his ent...

Childcare centres, ATMs along national highways soon

They say it's more about the journey than the destination. And it's perhaps this mantra which has driven the road transport ministry to devise a new roadmap for more comfortable road trips on India's highways. Over the next two years, all the major highways of the country will boast of such facilities as food courts, restaurants, internet facilities, ATMs, childcare facilities as well as rooms for breaks amid l ong journeys. "While there will be separate complexes for car and bus drivers, the facilities at sites meant for truckers would be different.Their requirement is different.  "The entire scheme has been designed in a manner that people get a good place to take a break, rest and eat during long journeys. There will be more such complexes along divided highways," said a ministry official.  Sources said road transport minister Nitin Gadkari has approved the plan, and has asked for the work to start. Soon after taking charge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi h...
